ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Digital Library

As a leading global source for scientific information, ACM promotes computer research and innovation through its journals, books, and the proceedings of more than 170 annual conferences and symposia.

The subscription fees, for ACM Digital Library, paid by UWC Library, cover Article Processing Charges (APCs) in all their journals and conference proceedings. This is an unlimited read and publish (transformational) agreement.

Africa Development Indicators

Africa Development Indicators is a detailed collection of data on Africa, containing over 1,600 indicators, covering 53 African countries and spanning the period 1961 to 2008. Data include social, economic, financial, natural resources, infrastructure, governance, partnership, and environmental indicators. Data are drawn from World Development Indicators, and other sources.

African Journals OnLine (AJOL)

African Journals OnLine (AJOL) is the world’s largest online library of peer-reviewed, African-published scholarly journals.
Historically, scholarly information has flowed from North to South and from West to East. It has also been difficult for African researchers to access the work of other African academics. In partnership with hundreds of journals from all over the continent, AJOL works to change this, so that African-origin research output is available to Africans and to the rest of the world.

Africa Knowledge Project (AKP)

Africa Knowledge Project, known as AKP, promotes Critical African Studies. It disseminates Africa-centered, evidence-based knowledge on Africa and African Diaspora.

African Writers Series

African Writers Series For over 40 years, Heinemann's African Writers Series published the key texts of modern African literature. It has a unique importance in the history of postcolonial writing. This online edition includes over 250 volumes of fiction, poetry, drama and non-fictional prose, including works by Chinua Achebe, Ama Ata Aidoo, Steve Biko, Buchi Emecheta, Nadine Gordimer, Bessie Head, Doris Lessing, Nelson Mandela, Dambudzo Marechera, Christopher Okigbo, Okot p'Bitek and Tayeb Salih.


Agricola (AGRICultural OnLine Access) is a bibliographic database of citations to the agricultural literature created by the US National Agricultural Library (NAL) and its cooperators. The records describe publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences.


AllAfrica.com provides access to content from more than 100 newspapers, magazines and news agencies across Africa, plus reporting and analysis by the award-winning AllAfrica news team and selected documents from more than 200 governmental and non-governmental institutions for inclusion in the AllAfrica News Wire feeds. UWC's subscription allows access to the AllAfrica archive, a unique collection containing 850,000 articles (and growing). ALUKA been an initiative of Ithaka, which is a non profit organization that has a mission of incubating promising new projects that support the use of technology for the benefit of higher education. An assumption of the incubation process is that successful projects will eventually become independent or join larger, existing organizations serving the academic community. At their recent meetings, the Ithaka and JSTOR Trustees approved a recommendation that the Aluka initiative be integrated into JSTOR.

American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

AAPG Datapages/Archives located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Datapages, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), a non-profit organization serving the needs of petroleum geology professionals and students worldwide. The African Journals Archive

The African Journals Archive is a retrospective digitisation project of full-text journal articles published in Africa, in the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, providing access to a multi-disciplinary, multi-country digital archive of Africa’s research and cultural heritage contained in its journal literature. The African Journal Archive is a project of Sabinet Gateway, a non-profit organisation promoting and supporting library and information services in Africa. The project is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Biological Abstracts (BA)

Biological Abstracts (BA) provides abstracts (not full-text) of articles from life sciences journals. Topics range from botany to microbiology to pharmacology. BA indexes articles from over 4000 serials each year.

BioMed Central

BioMed Central publishes over 200 peer-reviewed open access journals in all areas of medical research and biology.

BioOne Complete

BioOne Complete is an online aggregation of primary research in the fields of organismal biology, ecology, zoology, and environmental science. A valuable resource for students, faculty, and researchers, featuring timely content on a wide-array of today’s most pressing topics, including global warming, stem cell research, and ecological and biodiversity conservation.  For subscribing libaries, BioOne Complete offers a curated collection of independently-published journals, totaling 191 titles from 146 publishers. More than three-quarters of the subscribed titles are ranked in Thomson Reuters' Journal Citation Reports, and 45% are available online exclusively in BioOne Complete.

Business Source Complete (EbscoHost)

Business Source COMPLETE (EbscoHost) contains far more active, peer-reviewed, business related journals than any other database currently available. Cambridge Journals Online (Now called "Cambridge CORE")

Cambridge Journals Online provides full text for over one hundred journals in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Cochrane Library consists of a regularly updated collection of evidence-based medicine databases. Subject coverage includes: biology, health, medicine and nursing. CUDOS (Commonwealth Universities Database Online Service)

CUDOS (Commonwealth Universities Database Online Service) The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) database, CUDOS, contains higher education data from its member institutions. It covers 36 countries and app. 700 institutions, going into more depth than other reference tools. The data from the ACU's Commonwealth Universities Yearbook and International Awards 2001+ underpins the CUDOS content. Includes information about departmental research interests, awards and funding sources and study programme information. Obtain the access codes from your Faculty Librarian or enter CUDOS and request that the codes be emailed to you.

Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source (DOSS)

Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source (DOSS) covers all areas of dentistry and is updated weekly. It is searchable via the EBSCOhost platform. This revolutionary new database contains cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for 160 journals and dozens of monographs. It includes indexing for all dentistry and oral sciences journals commonly purchased by Dentistry Faculties.

"Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source" also includes an unprecedented collection of important full-text journals, as well as dozens of full-text monographs. The collection includes more than 130 journals, including many of the top ranked titles in the discipline.

Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

DOAJ is a community-curated list of open access journals and aims to be the starting point for all information searches for quality, peer reviewed open access material. The Directory of Open Access Journals was launched in 2003 at Lund University, Sweden, with 300 open access journals and today contains ca. 9000 open access journals covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, social science and humanities.

EBSCO eBooks™ Open Access Collection

The EBSCO eBooks™ Open Access Monograph Collection is DRM-free and available at no cost on the EBSCOhost® platform. The Collection, comprising approximately 8000 e-books, was created in collaboration with university presses and scholarly OA publishers such as University of Michigan Press, Taylor & Francis and Temple University Press.

EbscoHost Web

EbscoHost Web  allows you to access more than two dozen different databases covering a vast multitude of subjects. These databases can be searched individually (by clicking on the name of the database), or a few at a time (by selecting the check box next to those you wish to search), or all at once (by checking the Select All check box). Most databases provide full text access to articles from scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers. Some of the databases available via the EBSCOhost platform are multi-disciplinary, like "Academic Search Premier", for example.

Global Development Finance

Global Development Finance (GDF) is a World Bank database that provides statistical data on the debt and financial flows of the 136 countries that report public and publicly-guaranteed debt to the World Bank Debtor Reporting System.

Global Economic Monitor

Global Economic Monitor (GEM) is produced by the World Bank's Prospects Group (DECPG) of the Development Economics Vice-Presidency. GEM provides daily updates of global economic developments, with coverage of high income- as well as developing countries. Daily data is provided for exchange rates, equity markets, interest rates, stripped bond spreads, commodity prices and emerging market bond indices. Monthly data coverage is provided for consumer prices, high-tech market indicators, industrial production and merchandise trade, etc. Quarterly data is available for GDP, current account balances, and budget balances. All data sets are updated each weekday to capture the latest available observations.

Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Google Scholar helps you find relevant work across the world of scholarly research.

GreenFILE (free, open access database)

Greenfile provides scholarly, government and general-interest sources covering the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and governments and what can be done at each level to minimize negative impacts.

Institute of Physics (IOP) Electronic Journals provides access to more than 30 online physics journals, from 1874 to present. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) publishes a range of time series data on IMF lending, exchange rates and other economic and financial indicators. MasterFILE Premier (EbscoHost) is a multidisciplinary, Ebscohost database provides full text for more than 2,000 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes 268 full text reference books, nearly 100,000 biographies, 76,000 primary source documents, and an image collection of 116,000 photos, maps and flags. MathSciNet produced by the American Mathematical Society, is a comprehensive database covering the world's mathematical literature since 1940. It provides Web access to the bibliographic data and reviews of mathematical research literature contained in the Mathematical Reviews Database. It also provides hyperlinks to full-text articles in the Science Direct database.

Medicines Complete

MEDLINE (EbscoHost) is the National Library of Medicine’s database of indexed journal citations and abstracts. It covers the fields of biomedicine and health. This includes medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, behavioural sciences, chemical sciences, public health and much more.

MEDLINE (Pubmed)

MEDLINE (Pubmed) this is a service of the National Library of Medicine. It provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960’s and provides access to additional full-text life science journals. It also contains citations that precede the date that a journal was selected for MEDLINE indexing.

My LexisNexis

"My LexisNexis" offers full text, South African, legal and commercial information for students and lecturers. Users can access major law reference works, indexes, law reports, individual acts, statutes, practitioners manuals and textbooks. Subjects include labour law, financial planning and markets, income tax (includes Silke on South African Income Tax), intellectual property, payroll, pension funds, taxation of employees and VAT.

TRIP Database - to identify best evidence

The TRIP Database is a "..search tool designed to allow health professionals to rapidly identify the highest quality clinical evidence for clinical practice". You can search particularly for evidence that relates to the Developing World, and there is lots on Public Health as well as clinical evidence. As well as research evidence, Trip also allows clinicians to search across other content types including images, videos, patient information leaflets, educational courses and news.
