ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Digital Library

As a leading global source for scientific information, ACM promotes computer research and innovation through its journals, books, and the proceedings of more than 170 annual conferences and symposia.

The subscription fees, for ACM Digital Library, paid by UWC Library, cover Article Processing Charges (APCs) in all their journals and conference proceedings. This is an unlimited read and publish (transformational) agreement.

Africa Development Indicators

Africa Development Indicators contains macroeconomic, sectoral, and social indicators for 53 countries. To access this database, click on Sign In and select Public Login at the top right hand corner of the screen. Data indicators are drawn from the World Bank DataBank.

African Journals OnLine (AJOL)

African Journals OnLine (AJOL) is the world's largest and preeminent platform of African-published scholarly journals. AJOL is a Non-Profit Organization that (since 1998) works to increase global and continental online access, awareness, quality and use of African-published, peer-reviewed research.

Africa Knowledge Project (AKP)

Africa Knowledge Project, known as AKP, promotes Critical African Studies. It disseminates Africa-centered, evidence-based knowledge on Africa and African Diaspora.

African Writers Series

African Writers Series For over 40 years, Heinemann's African Writers Series published the key texts of modern African literature. It has a unique importance in the history of postcolonial writing. This online edition includes over 250 volumes of fiction, poetry, drama and non-fictional prose, including works by Chinua Achebe, Ama Ata Aidoo, Steve Biko, Buchi Emecheta, Nadine Gordimer, Bessie Head, Doris Lessing, Nelson Mandela, Dambudzo Marechera, Christopher Okigbo, Okot p'Bitek and Tayeb Salih.


Agricola (AGRICultural OnLine Access), a database produced by the National Agricultural Library (NAL), contains over 6 million records encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied discipline.

It consists of two subsets of records:

  • Citations for journal articles that include abstracts (NAL Article Citation Database)
  • Bibliographic records describing monographs, serials, audiovisual materials and online content from around the world (NAL Cataloging Database)

AllAfrica.com This search engine provides subscribers with a powerful research tool for exploring the AllAfrica story archive, which contains articles from 107 news publications throughout Africa. You can log in and access the advanced search page to view archived stories from partner publishers.


ALUKA was an online digital library focused on Africa-related material. It was an initiative of Ithaka Harbors, a non-profit organization focused on incubating promising new projects that use technology for the benefit of higher education. In June 2008, the Ithaka and JSTOR Trustees approved a recommendation that the Aluka initiative be integrated into JSTOR.

The African Journals Archive

The African Journals Archive is a retrospective open access journal service that preserves and makes available African journal literature dating as far back as 1906, originating from a wide base of publishers and societies on the African continent. The Carnegie Corporation of New York initiated and sponsored the Sabinet Gateway project. Sabinet is pleased to make it available as a collection via the Sabinet African Journals' platform.

Biological Abstracts (Coverage is from 2001 - 2005)

Biological Abstracts (BA) provides abstracts from peer-reviewed academic journal articles in the fields of biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, medicine, pharmacology, zoology, agriculture, and veterinary medicine.

BioMed Central

BioMed Central is an STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) publisher of 265 peer-reviewed open access journals. It is part of Springer Nature.

BioOne Complete

BioOne Complete is a database of more than 200 titles in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. UWC does not subscribe to BioOne Complete anymore. However, the database contains some articles that are open access (freely accessible) and these are marked as such.

Business Source Complete (EbscoHost)

Business Source COMPLETE covers all aspects of business; marketing, management, economics, finance, accounting, international business and more.

Cambridge Journals Online (Now called "Cambridge CORE")

Cambridge University Press (CUP) currently publishes over 400 peer-reviewed scholarly journals of which 330 are hybrid journals and 40 are gold open access journals. UWC has access to CUP's full collection, and UWC authors can also publish in most hybrid and gold open access Cambridge University Press journals without paying article processing charges (APCs). Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library (ISSN 1465-1858) is a collection of databases that contain different types of high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. The Cochrane Library is owned by Cochrane and published by Wiley.

The EBSCO eBooks™ Open Access Monograph Collection is DRM-free and available at no cost on the EBSCOhost® platform. The Collection, comprising approximately 8000 e-books, was created in collaboration with university presses and scholarly OA publishers such as University of Michigan Press, Taylor & Francis and Temple University Press.

EbscoHost Web

EbscoHost Web  allows you to access more than two dozen different databases covering a vast multitude of subjects. These databases can be searched individually (by clicking on the name of the database), or a few at a time (by selecting the check box next to those you wish to search), or all at once (by checking the Select All check box). Most databases provide full text access to articles from scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers. Some of the databases available via the EBSCOhost platform are multi-disciplinary, like "Academic Search Premier", for example.

EbscoHost Greenfile

EbscoHost Greenfile provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,000,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 15,000 records. It includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more.

Emerald eJournals Premier

The Emerald eJournals Premierdatabase is a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary journal database featuring the latest peer-reviewed, international research. The Emerald/SANLiC agreement for 2022-2024 is a Read & Publish transformational open access agreement that provides read access to the latest version of your subscriptions as well as permitting eligible corresponding authors to publish a capped number of articles as open access at no extra charge in the hybrid journals to which UWC subscribes

Global Development Finance

The Global Financial Development Database is an extensive dataset of financial system characteristics for 214 economies. It contains annual data, starting from 1960, and continuing up to the present date. It provides statistical data on the debt and financial flows of the 136 countries that report public and publicly-guaranteed debt to the World Bank Debtor Reporting System.

Global Economic Monitor

Global Economic Monitor (GEM) Providing daily updates of global economic developments, with coverage of high income- as well as developing countries. Daily data updates are provided for exchange rates, equity markets, and emerging market bond indices. Monthly data coverage (updated daily and populated upon availability) is provided for consumer prices, high-tech market indicators, industrial production and merchandise trade.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Google Scholar helps you find relevant work across the world of scholarly research.

GreenFILE (free, open access database)

Greenfile provides scholarly, government and general-interest sources covering the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and governments and what can be done at each level to minimize negative impacts.

Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL)

Health Source: Consumer Edition

HeinOnline content spans multiple law collections. Registered UWC users have access only to the research material in the Law Journal Library, English Reports, Full Reprint (1220 - 1865) and the Foreign and International Law Resources Database.

InCites (a Thomson Reuters product)

InCites Benchmarking & Analytics is a customized, web-based research evaluation tool that can help you develop your research strategy. InCites B&A allows you to analyze institutional productivity, monitor collaboration activity, identify influential researchers, showcase strengths, and discover areas of opportunity.

Incites works on 2-layer authentication so it requires username and password and is also IP authenticated. Therefore, to access InCites, you must register an email address to create an account.

Institute of Physics (IOP) Electronic Journals provides access to more than 30 online physics journals, from 1874 to present. IMF Free Data web site

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) publishes a range of time series data on IMF lending, exchange rates and other economic and financial indicators. MasterFILE Premier (EbscoHost)

MasterFILE Premier (EbscoHost) is a multidisciplinary, Ebscohost database provides full text for more than 2,000 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes 268 full text reference books, nearly 100,000 biographies, 76,000 primary source documents, and an image collection of 116,000 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.


MathSciNet produced by the American Mathematical Society, is a comprehensive database covering the world's mathematical literature since 1940. It provides Web access to the bibliographic data and reviews of mathematical research literature contained in the Mathematical Reviews Database. It also provides hyperlinks to full-text articles in the Science Direct database.

Medicines Complete

MEDLINE (EbscoHost) is the National Library of Medicine’s database of indexed journal citations and abstracts. It covers the fields of biomedicine and health. This includes medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, behavioural sciences, chemical sciences, public health and much more.

MEDLINE (Pubmed)

MEDLINE (Pubmed) this is a service of the National Library of Medicine. It provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960’s and provides access to additional full-text life science journals. It also contains citations that precede the date that a journal was selected for MEDLINE indexing.

My LexisNexis

"My LexisNexis" offers full text, South African, legal and commercial information for students and lecturers. Users can access major law reference works, indexes, law reports, individual acts, statutes, practitioners manuals and textbooks. Subjects include labour law, financial planning and markets, income tax (includes Silke on South African Income Tax), intellectual property, payroll, pension funds, taxation of employees and VAT.

PubMed is a service of the US National Library of Medicine® that:

The South African Geological Literature (SAGEOLIT) database contains bibliographic information on geoscientific publications, selected journal articles, unpublished reports and maps, mainly from holdings of the Library of the CGS and its Information Centre. Emphasis is placed on Africa, especially southern Africa, although records cover all aspects of geoscience, worldwide. A unique feature of SAGEOLIT is the Map Database. SAGEOLIT focusses on Southern- and Sub-Saharan Africa, with special emphasis on the SADC countries, but also carries information on geoscientific literature on all parts of the world.

TRIP Database - to identify best evidence

The TRIP Database is a "..search tool designed to allow health professionals to rapidly identify the highest quality clinical evidence for clinical practice". You can search particularly for evidence that relates to the Developing World, and there is lots on Public Health as well as clinical evidence. As well as research evidence, Trip also allows clinicians to search across other content types including images, videos, patient information leaflets, educational courses and news.
